About Maleko McDonnell

I’m a former journalist turned communications strategist, now focused on public service and storytelling that drives real impact.

For the better part of 30 years, I reported and produced stories across Hawaii—on air, online, and in the field. My time in journalism shaped how I approach communication today: with clarity, curiosity, and a deep respect for the people whose stories we tell.

Today, I serve as Communications Manager for the United Public Workers union, leading campaigns that inform, mobilize, and advocate for thousands of public employees across the islands. My work bridges media, policy, and community, ensuring that the voices of working people are heard in the moments that matter most.

This site is a curated archive of past reporting and a way to get in touch. Thanks for stopping by.

  • Experienced Broadcaster

For nearly a decade, I connected with Hawai‘i audiences as a trusted voice in local broadcasting. As morning anchor for Good Morning Hawaii on KITV4, I delivered news with clarity and compassion, covering everything from breaking headlines to community-driven features like Moving Forward, which spotlighted small businesses navigating the pandemic.

My background also includes nearly 20 years on Honolulu’s Star 101.9-FM, where I hosted Maleko’s Room, one of the top afternoon-drive shows in the market. From natural disasters to live election coverage, I’ve been behind the mic during some of the state’s most pivotal moments.

In 2020, I co-produced Living Room Live – #AlohaTogether, a statewide telethon that raised over $100,000 worth of critical medical supplies for frontline workers during the COVID crisis. For me, broadcasting has always been about showing up for the community when it matters most.

  • Influential Communicator

As Communications Manager for United Public Workers, AFSCME Local 646, I lead the messaging strategy for a union representing some 13,000 public employees across Hawai‘i. From contract campaigns to crisis communications, I help turn complex issues into clear, motivating messages that inform and empower our members.

Before entering the labor movement, I built a career in marketing and media, developing campaigns, managing digital platforms, and producing content for iHeartMedia, Events International, and others. My approach has always been rooted in connection: using story and strategy to reach the right people at the right time.

Beyond the office, I’ve co-produced marquee public events like Le Dîner en Blanc – Honolulu and created award-winning podcasts and influencer campaigns. I see communications as more than messaging; it’s a tool for change.

  • Public Speaker

Whether energizing thousands at the start line of the Honolulu Marathon or raising vital funds at a charity gala, I bring presence, warmth, and purpose to the mic. As an emcee, announcer, and auctioneer, I’ve been trusted to represent major events across Hawai‘i’s nonprofit, arts, and sports scenes.

You’ve likely heard me at the Hapalua Half-MarathonKing’s Runner 10K, Miss Hawaii (Miss America) competitions, or the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival. Offstage, I support causes I care about—lending my voice to the American Heart Association, Hawaii Land Trust, Institute for Human Services, and more.

Every audience is different, but the goal is always the same: connect, uplift, and leave people better than you found them.

  • Winning Talent

Across broadcast, theatre, and public service, I’ve built a career on creativity, credibility, and adaptability.

As anchor of Good Morning Hawaii, I helped expand the show to 4.5 hours of live coverage, guiding viewers through breaking news, local reporting, and global events with clarity and heart. My work in radio earned me “Best Radio Personality” honors from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s People’s Choice awards.

On stage, I have been honored with Po‘okela Awards for my performances at Manoa Valley Theatre, where I currently serve on the board. From “The Odd Couple” to “Peter and the Starcatcher,” acting has sharpened my storytelling instincts and deepened my appreciation for the power of live connection.
